Kiscaden’s Choice
Today, Senator Sheila Kiscaden is announcing that she will
be running with Kelly Doran as his Lt. Governor Candidate.
Senator Kiscaden came to the Independence Party in 2002
shortly after being stripped of her Republican endorsement by
the extremists who have taken over that party. We welcomed
her, avidly supported her and provided her a vehicle to place
the interests of her constituents ahead of partisan
politics.
Although this relationship ends today, the Independence
Party, Sen. Kiscaden, and most importantly the citizens of
Rochester benefited from it.
“Senator Kiscaden and the Independence Party share the
same goal of setting aside partisanship for the best
interests of Minnesota” commented Jim Moore, Chair of the
Independence Party. “But we fundamentally disagree on the
means to achieve it.” He continued “She feels that a
moderating influence can move the DFL toward better public
policy.” “We are convinced that true change cannot come from
a political party that vigorously defends the status quo
while collecting massive amounts of money from powerful
interests seeking influence.”
In an era of gridlock, shutdowns, and partisan
grandstanding, the likelihood of change in the Democratic and
Republican Parties has become increasingly remote. In their
cold war view of politics, winning elections is more
important than good public policy. They will not change their
tactics, for they have successfully held power using them.
The politics of division, polarization and the special
interest arms race will only become more rampant.
Only an outsider free from the influences that empower the
DFL and Republican parties can bring back visionary
leadership and boldly creative public policy that unites
Minnesotans toward a better future. It takes more than a few
slogans to do so; it takes the courage of a maverick. Such a
maverick will be entering the gubernatorial contest under the
Independence Party banner at the end of this month. The race
is just beginning.
