Local Issues Highlight IP Activists
As a true grassroots organization, we seek your involvement in
political issues at all levels of government. Particularly, we
believe that we must focus on local issues to build the party in
the manner we originally intended. We need more
messengers to step up and passionately lead the charge in changing
our democracy for the better. Several have, including:
- Dan Justesen, who is leading a charge to demand answers and
accountability from the Minneapolis Public School System as
they consider closing his daughter’s recently renovated
school to build an unnecessary $35 million school in its
place.
- Mike Landy, who is leading a charge to build the Northstar
Corridor Rail line as an alternative mode of transportation
along a route between St. Cloud and the Twin Cities.
- Al Sigafus, who, based upon his long experience in local
government, is calling for reform in our delivery of public
services at the county level to eliminate wasteful overhead.
- Herb Weyrauch, who, as a local party secretary, has helped
organize informational meetings on several pressing policy
matters - providing venues for the public, candidates, and
policy-makers to interact.
- Nancy Jorgenson, who worked fervently to prevent the closing
of the Fernbrook Nature Center in Fridley that was at risk
after cuts in state Local Government Aid led city leaders to
consider turning this center into a golf course.
Additionally, three Ventura appointments consistently display
our party principles of integrity, responsibility, and service in
their respective positions:
- Mary Mellen, who serves as a citizen member of the
Environmental Quality Board with her passion for developing
strategies to enhance our long term environmental quality.
- Clyde Miller, who serves as Chair of the Campaign Finance and
Public Disclosure Board, bringing true non-partisan leadership
to this high-profile public “watchdog” committee that
oversees campaign finance disclosure.
- James “Red” Nelson, who serves on the Citizens' Advisory
Commission to the Legislative Committee on Minnesota Resources,
which manages the lottery trust fund dedicated to
environmental projects. He was also a dedicated servant on the
Metropolitan Council in the Ventura Administration.
In short, passionate party members working on heated local
issues or serving on influential boards are one of the best public
relations tools we have to build our party. We need more like
them. Even if you are not such a “Messenger,” please help us
recruit one in your area.
